Untitled
Year: 2024
Material: wood, cheesecloth, video projection
Dimensions: 150 x 350 cm (body-size)
AboutTwo full-size wooden screens form the basis for this video installation. Cheesecloth is stretched between the frames, a material that references the curtains from the artist's childhood home. Due to the transparency of the cloth, the visibility of the work varies based on the changing light in the room. The screens display video recordings of sleeping bodies, focusing on the shadow effects of breathing bellies in a loop. A constantly shifting focus of the camera creates an abstract movement within the two frames. The work responds to the environment; the fabric moves gently along with air currents or the movement of spectators.
Information This work emerged from a class taught by Yuki Okumura. For ‘Diaristic Solo Performance’ students were assigned to design a self portrait through a ritual they would perform daily. ‘Untitled’ is a series of 30 photographs that the artist took daily for 30 days, the performance the artist developed is titled: ‘Non-figurative Self-Portrait / Automatic Autobiography’.
